Music Therapy for Adults

Individual Therapy

Music therapy for individual adults focuses on the relationship built between the client and therapist, using music, sounds, silence and talking if that's helpful. The client has access to percussion instruments, which they are free to play as they wish, to express feelings, or just to play and see which feelings emerge.

We take the process at their pace and what they feel comfortable with and able to share about themself. Individual therapy allows me to offer direct and tailored support for each client.

I often play at the same time as my clients, listening and responding to their unique music and reflecting the quality of their sounds and experience back to them.

Individual music therapy can be helpful for people of all ages. My approach is tailored to suit clients, from those who can use verbal language, but find accessing and talking about their feelings and experiences difficult, to clients who have no verbal language, but show an interest in and response to music and sounds as a way of expressing themselves and engaging with others.

Depending on the age and needs of the people in the group, I offer a mixture of structured and less structured activities which balance safety and familiarity with freedom of expression and discovering new ways of playing and relating to others.

Group members are assessed individually in the first instance, and a group is put together with careful thought about the combination of needs and personalities and how these might work together to help everyone in the group.
